The biggest airport in the German-speaking area handels more than 50
millions passengers per year and holds a top position in Europe. Its
importance as Germany's leading hub got the airport after the World War
II. The city of Frankfurt was the focus city for American troops in
Germany. Beside a mayor military air base also important civil
operations developed. Soon regularly flights to Northern America were
      launched.

1955 German Lufthansa restarted its services and developed Frankfurt as
its central hub. This helped the airport to become an important city for
business. This helped the development of the town, because optimal
connections throughout Europe as well worldwide are on offer. Beside the
city became Europes 2nd most important banking city, which generates
      additional attractive premium traffic.

Lufthansa dominates the traffic together with its Star Alliance airlines
and its other partners. Additionally numerous other airlines serve the
destination on a regular basis. Also the leisure carrier Condor is based
there which concentrates its long-haul-operations and conducts maintenance
services for all of its fleet.

Constructionwise the airport contiuned its development. Central elements
of the infrastructure are the 1972 opened terminal 1 and the 1992 opened
terminal 2. Both terminals refelect the architectonical trends of its
relvant eras. New regulations in the handling of new airports and changes in the way
of handling passengers led to numerous construction works within the
buildings, which continue to the present day.

In the following years the airport wants to expand: It constructed
a further runway and is planning to add an additional terminal. The existing structures shall
      be modernised and expanded.
