MANCHESTER
AIRPORT - RINGWAY |
|
|
The Ringway airport situated south of the northern English city of Manchester is England's biggest airport outside London. In 2005 22.7 million passengers used the facilities. The Manchester region is the 2nd biggest metropolitan area England's and its region includes further big cities like Liverpool, Blackpool, Chester and Leeds. There is no other airport in Europe of this size that has such a diverse traffic than Manchester. This may be caused by a whole range of circumstances, but the main point is that none of the big airline alliances dominates the traffic. In Manchester you find a good mixture of all alliances, charter traffic and also a growing number of low cost carriers. Also cargo plays an important role at the airport, as Manchester is home to the largest Asian community in Europe. Dragonair and Cathay Pacific each employ its B747 freighters on their flights. Passenger services to Asia are dominated by Emirates, Pakistan International and Singapore Airlines. Manchester handles also a big ammount of traffic to the US: Beside the British airlines BMI, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic also American Airlines, Continental, Delta or US Airways use Ringway airport as their gateway to Northern England. Nearly all English charter airlines use Manchester airport for their flights to the popular holiday destinations around the world as the most important charter airlines from these destinations also come to Manchester. But Ringway airport is also a hub for some low cost carriers: BMIbaby, Jet 2 and Thomsonfly have each based some of its aircrafts there and offer flights to destinations all over Europe. Manchester
has grown to an importnat airport in the last decades, which can also be
seen looking at its buildings. Each of the three terminals
represents the time of its construction and has its own characteristics. |
