AZORES
In the middle of
the Atlantic Ocean, situated at a third of the distance between
Europe and Northern America, there is the Azorean archipelago. On
first sight it isn't a "to-do" destination for the common
spotter, but the nine islands offer a broad variety of movements.
But there remains still enough time to discover the beautiful
landscape, stunning culture and the friendly people. The Azores also
offer the last chance to fly with one of the last remaining BAe ATPs
in passenger service. The main airports of the islands are Ponta
Delgada and Terceira, at the latter it isn't allowed to do
photography, as the US Air Force maintains an air base there. From
these two airports most flights to Europe, the US and Canada depart.
The airports of Horta, Pico and Santa Maria just maintain regular
links to Lisbon. On the remaining islands there are only
intra-archipelago air links operated by BAe ATP and Do228 of SATA
Air Acores. |
